Serena Willams, Kim Ng, Jen Welter. What do these names all have in common? They are women in sports, just like Delta Gamma sister Nyrie I.. Nyrie, a Boca Raton local, grew up watching ESPN instead of Disney Channel and considers sports a way of life more than a form of entertainment. As a kid, she bounced from sport to sport until she fell in love with volleyball and played for seven years. In addition, Nyrie’s father raised her to become a sports fanatic by taking her to all sorts of Florida sporting events throughout her childhood.

Because her childhood was heavily influenced by sports, she knew she would have to dive into something sports-related in college. After always being the woman who wanted to know more about sports than her male counterparts in the room and being knocked down countless times for wanting a career in sports as a woman, Nyrie took to her love for writing to find her place in the sports world. Through her father’s support and the support of her sisters in Delta Gamma, she decided to start her own sports blog. Nyrie says, “I started my sports blog, SpeakSports.org, when I realized there needed to be more female voices in the sports world.”

As a Panhellenic woman, Nyrie credits her time in her chapter to helping her grow as a person, a writer, and a woman in sports. Nyrie alluded to the idea that being in Panhellenic and Delta Gamma has given her the confidence to pursue her love for sports further with her blog and feel strong in her passions and future plans of working as a woman in a male-dominated field. As a writer, Nyrie said her sisters and her chapter are so supportive and constantly hyping her up through sharing her work and encouraging her to continue. Nyrie said, “I am so appreciative of all my sisters, they are hands down some of the most supporting and uplifting groups of people I have been involved with.”

Nyrie advises anyone who is interested in becoming a writer to keep their head up and never give up. “There will be so many people that disagree with your views or your ideas, people that tell you you can't do it, but that should just be more of a reason to do it, prove them wrong.” The Panhellenic community is proud to have a sister like Nyrie, that uses her passions and confidence that the community helped instill in her, to take on the world as a strong woman writer in the male-dominated field of sports.
