Brainfreeze with the Phi’s

Being a part of the Panhellenic community at Florida State University offers so many experiences for its members to participate in and get involved with. One great way is Philanthropy. Alpha Phi, in particular, is very passionate about their philanthropy, Women’s Heart Health, which raises money and awareness for cardiovascular disease. To ensure an effective impact, year after year, Alpha Phi has encouraged students to attend their annual event by offering everyone’s favorite end of night treat: ice cream.
The women of Alpha Phi hosted their annual Alpha Phreeze event this past Wednesday, Sept. 29th, in order to raise money for The Alpha Phi Foundation, as well as Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Alpha Phreeze offered friends and family within the community the opportunity to come show their support by eating ice cream. Sisters out front of the chapter kindly welcomed supporters inside as they walked up the stairs. Inside the chapter there were tables with various flavor options, a loaded toppings bar, a DJ playing music, and endless chatter as people were content with their dessert choice of the night.
The women of Alpha Phi think it is incredibly important to spread awareness. Svea K., The Director of Philanthropy, was very pleased to say that Alpha Phi had surpassed their ticket sales goal as all members sold at least five tickets and others sold up to 70. She was very excited about the turnout, as so many people came to show their support.
The funds they raise get split in half and go directly to The Alpha Phi Foundation as well as our local hospital here in the Tallahassee area, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. This money goes to fund research within the foundation and medical equipment used by patients in the hospital. Svea is the main point of contact with TMH and coordinates tours with them for her members to see the Alpha Phi Wing. While on tours they get to meet the physicians who use the equipment they have provided. Svea says, “it is so rewarding to see firsthand what all of the money we raise goes straight to”.
Leading up to the event, the women of Alpha Phi also coordinated a blood drive on Landis Green. This allowed students to simply walk up and donate their blood, which is a great way to give back to the community.
Mykaela S., a sophomore in PC ‘20, is the Assistant Director of Philanthropy and works alongside Svea. Prior to the event, she expressed her hope to raise as much money as possible while also spreading awareness of their philanthropy across all of FSU, not just Greek life. In addition, Olivia E., an active member in PC ‘19, was also proud to say that her favorite part of the event was being able to invite members of other chapters into their chapter facility, which was their first in-house event since the COVID-19 pandemic, to show them what they have been working on.
