Not So Spooky but So Panhellenic

Writers: Bella B. & Isabelle B.

Whether you live for the thrill or would prefer a chill night in watching scary movies, Panhellenic’s Not So Spooky event made sure that everyone could participate in some creative Halloween activities.

On October 25th, 2023, Panhellenic hosted their event for greeks and ghouls, Not So Spooky. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) to bring together women from these councils to bond before the holiday. Hosted by Rachel W., the current Vice President of Programming, the night within the Union Basement consisted of/included:

  • Free, comfortable, shirts to embrace the Panhellenic love

  • Build-a-bear activity with Halloween themes black cats

  • Bowling

  • Mocktails like Hocus Pocus Punch and Spooky Shirleys

  • Silent Disco

  • Creating need packages for women within Tallahassee

  • Halloween snacks like mummy and pumpkin cake pops

Every Panhellenic event works to bring women from their own and different chapters, as well as councils, to the same place and share all kinds of fun together! Rachel W, within her Panhellenic role, has a duty to plan, create, and put together an event each month to do this. “[My] position has always kind of been to bring the fun and make people want to come back,” she says.

The event has proven extremely successful the past few years, and some women like Allison B., a junior, can not wait for the event each year. “Not-So-Spooky is an event that Panhellenic puts on to get women in the community together,” she says. Beginning as Pi Beta Phi’s junior delegate, Allison has now worked her way to be fully integrated within the Panhellenic community. This event provided an outlet for her to become further involved within Panhellenic sisterhood.  “My favorite part of it was the stuffing station! I loved how it incorporated an area to stuff bags for women in need and also an area for making a cute stuffed animal!”

Alexa S., a sophomore in Chi Omega, adds, “I went with my Big, Brooke C., to the event, and it was really special to be able to connect with her and the women from my own chapter, while also meeting and conversing with women from other chapters. There is a sense of unity within the Greek community that I can find beyond my own chapter.”

While this event may seem like all fun and games for FSU’s Greek community, it serves a purpose of much greater importance: community. Alexa serves as Chi Omega’s Council Relations Chair, and holds events like these near and dear to her heart. “These types of events are important because it helps bridge the divide within the Greek community by making connections with people in different councils. The Union is a shared space on campus for everyone, so it is the perfect place for us to gather comfortably, and to not feel intimidated by an unfamiliar environment,” she said.

As the semester progresses, it is necessary that we continue to acknowledge the significance of council relations. Mahika A., who is in the Order of Omega, sums up the event beautifully. “One word I would use to define this event is ‘impactful.’ This event, and others like it, are social and philanthropic in nature because these are shared values within every council. But what we make of it, who we choose to talk to and the effort we put into making connections, is what makes all the difference.”
