Share the Love

Sisterhood is a special bond created when women come together to appreciate each other and their chapter. Many sororities have events to celebrate, but Sigma Delta Tau (Sig Delt) takes their love of sisterhood to a new level. Abi S., Sig Delt’s Sisterhood Programming Coordinator, created a week-long event to admire the value Sig Delt sisters have for one another. Sisterhood Appreciation Week included a variety of events centered around showing appreciation for one another and sharing love.

To preface the week, each sister was given a bag with their name on it. The bag would serve as a place for sisters to put little gifts to remind each person why they love them. The sisters were encouraged to write notes to as many sisters as possible; this way, close friends, as well as new friends, could be appreciated. On the first day of the week, there was a movie night with snacks and a sing-along for the sisters to come together to kick the week off. The second day included each sister getting to make coasters with clay and paint, which was a memorable event for many sisters. There was a lot of joy that day. On the third day, the sisters got to enjoy treats in the chapter facility, including cookies and cupcakes, to display how sweet their sisterhood is. On the fourth day of the week, they held a bracelet making activity where they invited alumni, family members, and friends for brunch and activities. Sisters were able to make bracelets for themselves or for their guests.

On day five, the final day of Sisterhood Appreciation Week, the sisters were given their bags from the beginning of the week. It was emphasized that the importance of this event was to add meaning to the little things in life, and to remind people of how much they mean to us. Simple things like sharing a memory or writing someone a note can be a great reminder of the love that sisters can hold for each other. Alyssa F., a Sig Delt sister, says, “When I opened my note from my big, I cried. We spend a lot of time together and always have a lot of fun. We are always laughing. However, it is not often that we truly take a moment to tell each other how grateful we are that this life brought us together and how much we mean to each other.”

This week tied together many aspects of Sig Delt’s sisterhood. The goal was to create an event that was solely centered around giving and receiving love. This inspired the planning team to ensure all of the events planned had ways of showing appreciation to different sisters. Whether it was giving someone a gift like a bracelet, making new memories watching a movie or eating together, or writing someone a heartfelt note, everyone was shown appreciation.

Ivy M., Sig Delt’s Vice President of Membership Experience, describes how special it was to be able to honor their house mom and kitchen staff with notes for sisterhood appreciation week too. She also mentioned how moved she was to receive notes of appreciation from her sisters and house mom.

This was a week that sisters will cherish forever, and a new tradition that the women of Sig Delt can continue to have for years to come. Alyssa points out, “college is crazy, and it is easy to get so caught up in the craziness of it all that I forget to thank the people who get me through. This week gave me the space to reflect and thank the people who mean the most of me and who get me through my toughest moments.”
